Over the last years, the Amazon has become a focal point for both political commitments and financial pledges aimed at halting deforestation and advancing sustainable development. Yet, despite this wave of ambition, the Amazon remains under siege. Gold mining, in particular, continues to drive deforestation, degrade ecosystems, and displace Indigenous and traditional communities, exposing the disconnect between political discourse and on-the-ground realities.
To address this gap, Amazon Conservation is launching a regional-scale initiative: the "Amazon Mining Policy Scoreboard". Leveraging the power of Amazon Mining Watch and the organization’s network of local partners, this scoreboard identifies leading performers and laggards in order to promote accountability, encourage competition, guide resource allocation, and support evidence-based decision-making. In the context of environmental governance, this scoreboard can play a critical role in aligning regional, national, and subnational actions with global sustainability targets by making implementation disparities visible and actionable.
Countries are evaluated across three key dimensions: legal frameworks, mining policies, and investigation and enforcement. Each dimension is worth up to five points, for a total possible score of 15. Click on “Details” to view the full analysis for each country.
Each assessment dimension is made up of multiple categories and criteria. Visit the details page for each dimension to see how the score is calculated.
This platform and analysis is led by Amazon Conservation Association.
